The International Festival of Owls is celebrate the first weekend of March in Houston, Minnesota originally held to celebrate the hatching of Alice the Great Horned Owl, but now is a beautiful opportunity to learn about owls at the International Owl Center and recognize the amazing things that humans are doing to help owls around the world. There are fun activities available throughout the weekend for both kids and adults including things like the owl prowl, in which you go out with an expert owl caller to give you the experience of hearing and possibly seeing wild owls, owl nest building, owl pellet dissection and opportunities to meet an owl among so many more!

In honor of this festival and these magnificent creatures, I’ve searched free owl crochet patterns and put together a collection of more than 90 cute owl crochet patterns for you! You’ll find home decor projects like crocheted owl stuffies, coasters and blankets as well as cute crochet owl themed beanies and appliques, just to name a few.

Free Owl Crochet Patterns in Laceweight Yarn / Thread

Atticus Owl designed by Bella Crochet in a non-specified #10 cotton crochet thread. Aunt Lydia’s is probably the most popular #10 cotton crochet thread, but Artiste brand from Hobby Lobby also has a beautiful range of colors including metallics, Knit Picks offers Curio #10, and personally, I have been enjoying Circulo Clea.

You’ll also need some 3/4″ buttons, or there are a lot of other options too including felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl Table Runner designed by HandmadeByRaine in Aunt Lydia’s #10 Cotton Crochet Thread. This filet crochet pattern has both a chart and written instructions for each row.

Owl Pyramid Snowflake designed by Snowcatcher in Aunt Lydia’s #10 Cotton Crochet Thread.

Filet Crochet Owl Window Curtain Wall Hanging Doily designed by Filet Crochet by Maria in J&P Coats Royale Classic Crochet Thread, which has been discontinued but Aunt Lydia’s #10 Cotton Crochet Thread, Knit Picks Curio #10, and Circulo Clea are great alternatives, but you could easily switch up the weight of yarn to create a larger fabric if you wanted to do something like a blanket or rug. Note: This filet crochet pattern only has a chart to work from.

Pineapple Owl Ornament or Bookmark designed by Bella Crochet in a non-specified #10 cotton crochet thread. Aunt Lydia’s is probably the most popular #10 cotton crochet thread, but Artiste brand from Hobby Lobby also has a beautiful range of colors including metallics, Knit Picks offers Curio #10, and personally, I have been enjoying Circulo Clea.

You’ll also need some 1/4″ buttons, or there are a lot of other options too including felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Free Owl Crochet Patterns in Fingering Weight Yarn

Ulvi Owl designed by Dutch Crochet in Scheepjes Catona and Scheepjes Colourcrafter. You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes, or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Uwila designed by Cirsium Crochet in Knit Picks Stroll Hand Painted.

Oliver Tunisian Crochet Owl designed by Morning Poppy in Moda Vera Gelato, which I’m not finding much information on, but as a 50/50 cotton and wool blend, Scheepjes Catona is a great alternative, but you could easily use your favorite fingering weight yarn from your stash.

You’ll also need some stuffing and either buttons or you have a lot of alternative options like safety eyes, felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl Pencil Topper designed by Teia de Carinhos in Fios Pingouin Tropfil, which is a 100% cotton, fingering weight from Brazil that comes in a cone like cotton thread. Circulo Anne is a great alternative or even a cotton/acrylic blend like Knit Picks Comfy Fingering.

Little Owl designed by Johanna Harjula in Sandnes Garn Sisu, which is a 80% wool, 20% nylon fingering weight yarn from Norway and looks like is not available for shipping to the US, but this is a really close fiber composition to most fingering weight sock yarns out there so any sock weight yarn would be a perfect alternative, or you could go with something like has more cotton in it, like Knit Picks Comfy Fingering, for added durability.

You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few. To turn your little owl into a keychain, you’ll want to grab your choice of a keychain finding as well, but I’m picturing these owls as also making cute pom pom alternatives at the corners of a shawl, blanket or earflap hat.

Free Owl Crochet Patterns in SPORT Weight Yarn

Atahualpa Owl designed by Pica Pau for Hobbii in a combination of sport weight yarns including Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/6, Hobbii Baby Cotton Organic Midi and Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/6, which are all 100% cotton yarns. Queensland Coastal Cotton Fine is a great alternative, but you have a lot of flexibility here too for this stuffie so feel free to check your stash to see what you have that will work. You can even go up to lightweight yarns, since some of them are so close in gauge to sport weight.

You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Halloween Owl designed by Yaroslava Sherstiuk in YarnArts Jeans Yarn, which is a 55% cotton, 45% acrylic yarn.

You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Lacy Owl designed by Made by Gootie in Schachenmayr Catania, a 100% cotton yarn from Germany. Queensland Coastal Cotton Fine is a great alternative, but you have a lot of flexibility here too for this stuffie so feel free to check your stash to see what you have that will work. You can even go up to lightweight yarns, since some of them are so close in gauge to sport weight. You’ll also need some stuffing.

Owls All Around You Hat designed by Nettina Conkey in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, which makes for a really cozy hat.

Owl Rattle designed by Kumutushka in a combination of sport weight yarns including YarnArts Jeans and Alize Cotton Gold. These yarns are both 55% cotton, 45% acrylic.

You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few. To make this owl into a rattle, you’ll want to grab a rattle insert as well, but without it, it’s still an adorable amigurumi.

Owl the Lens Buddy designed by Apuuga’s Amigurumi in Schachenmayr Catania, a 100% cotton yarn from Germany. Queensland Coastal Cotton Fine is a great alternative.

You’ll also need some safety eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Tunisian Crochet Owl Pillow designed by Neen in Schachenmayr Catania, a 100% cotton yarn from Germany. Queensland Coastal Cotton Fine is a great alternative. You’ll also need some stuffing.

Jip the Owl designed by Woolytoons in Schachenmayr Catania, a 100% cotton yarn from Germany. Queensland Coastal Cotton Fine is a great alternative.

You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes, or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Free Owl Crochet Patterns in Lightweight Yarn

Day & Night Owls designed by Tiny Curl in Rico Ricorumi DK, a 100% cotton yarn. Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/4 is a great alternative. You’ll also need some stuffing.

Owl Granny Square designed by Granny Square.Me. It’s not specified in the pattern which yarn was used other than a DK wool. There are a lot of great options depending on the project you want to make with your granny square. For something like a purse, I’d recommend either Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK or Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/4. For something like a cozy blanket or scarf, I’d recommend Berroco Vintage DK or Lion Brand Wool Ease DK. You can even change up the yarn weight and hook size to get different sized squares.

Puffy Owl Phone Sleeve designed by VL Creations in a non-specified DK weight yarn. For a bag that will see a lot of wear, I’d recommend a 100% cotton yarn, like Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK or Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/4, or you could easily go up to a larger weight yarn and hook for a larger shoulder bag. You’ll also want a toggle button for the nose and closure.

Frilly Owl Applique designed by Creative Crochet Workshop in Vinnis Colours Nikkim, a 100% cotton yarn hand dyed in South Africa. Though no hand dyed, Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/4 is a great alternative, especially because it comes in so many shades of the same color, so you could easily get the same kind of ombre coloring.

Owl Hot Water Bottle Cover designed by Jera’s Jamboree in Emu Classic DK, a 100% acrylic yarn from the UK. I think for a hot water bottle cover, I’d recommend a 100% cotton yarn, like Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/4, or a 100% wool yarn, for added durability and heat control.

Owl Granny Square designed by Raffamussa Designs in Paintbox Simply DK Yarn, a 100% acrylic yarn.

Owl Applique designed by Golden Lucy Crafts in Patons Grace Yarn, which is a 100% mercerized cotton yarn. Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK and Circulo Charme are great alternatives, though you have a lot of flexibility with appliques. You’ll also want either some googly eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl Cushion designed by Atelier Marie-Lucienne in a combination of lightweight yarns including Stylecraft Special Double Knit, a 100% acrylic yarn. You’ll also want a 12″ pillow insert or stuffing.

Ernesto il Gufo designed by The Crochettisti in a non-specified lightweight yarn. With the little blocks and accents, this is a great project to raid your yarn stash and see what you have that will work.

You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes, or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Toddler Owl Vest designed by the Magic of Crafting in Ice Yarns Baby Model, a 100% acrylic yarn.

Owl Baby Booties designed by Hopeful Honey in Patons Australia Cotton Blend 8 ply, a 50/50 wool/cotton blend yarn from Australia. Cascade Anchor Bay is a great alternative you can find at your local yarn shop that carries Cascade brand.

Betoto the Little African Flower Owl Phone Cover designed by Lolly’s Crafty Crochet a non-specified DK weight yarn.

Owl Trivet designed by Zooty Owl in Raeesah Cotton Soft DK, a 100% cotton yarn that has been discontinued, but Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/4 is a great alternative. This would be a fun project to size down on the yarn weight and hook size to get more of a coaster, or size up for a slightly larger trivet/doily.

Little Owl Bookmark designed by Jelly Designs in a non-specified lightweight yarn. I think for a bookmark, I might use a 100% cotton yarn, like Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK or Circulo Charme, so it’s more flat rather than fluffy, but really, the skies the limit. I also think this owl bookmark would make an excellent applique for a woodland themed blanket or wall hanging.

Bonbon the Owl designed by Snappy Tots in Lion Brand Bonbons Yarn, a 100% acrylic yarn that comes in set of 8 really cute, tiny balls, which is perfect for small colorblock crochet patterns.

Kids Merlin Vest from Drops Design in Garnstudio DROPS Merino Extra Fine, a 100% merino wool yarn. Knit Picks Swish DK is a great alternative, or I also love Berroco Vintage DK and Lion Brand Wool Ease DK for cozy wearables.

Owl Mittens designed by The Green Dragonfly in a non-specified lightweight yarn. For a cozy pair of gloves, I’d recommend Berroco Vintage DK, Lion Brand Wool Ease DK or Knit Picks Swish DK.

Graduation Owl Applique designed by Golden Lucy Designs in a non-specified lightweight yarn for the majority and #10 cotton crochet thread for some accents. She often uses Patons Grace and Aunt Lydia’s #10 Cotton Crochet Thread so it’s possible those were the yarns, but the nice thing about appliques is that the materials are really flexible.

You’ll also want either some googly eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Free Owl Crochet Patterns in Worsted Weight Yarn

Snowy Owl Hat designed by Repeat Crafter Me for Yarnspirations in Caron Simply Soft.

Crocodile Stitch Owl Hat designed by Yawns and Yarn in Caron Simply Soft.

Willa the Owl Bat designed by Divine Debris in Bernat Super Value. You’ll also need some stuffing and for the eyes, Amber drew them on with puffy paint, but you have a lot of alternative options like safety eyes, felt eyes and embroidering the eyes on, just to name a few. To make the wings stick up, you’ll want to use some pipe cleaners.

Owl Beanie designed by Yarnee Marmee in Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice for most of the hat and Lion Brand’s Homespun for some of the furry accents.

Owl Cross Stitch Dishcloth from Yarnspirations in Lily Sugar n Cream.

Wendy the Owl designed by Divine Debris in a combination of Caron’s One Pound and Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice. You’ll also need some stuffing and for the eyes, Amber used buttons, but you have a lot of alternative options like safety eyes, felt eyes embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl Apple Cozy designed by Petals to Picots in a non-specified worsted weight cotton yarn. I recommend using a yarn that is colorfast, like Knit Picks Dishie or Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6, so you don’t have to worry about the dye bleeding onto your apple if the apple was wet when it went into the cozy. You’ll also need some buttons to secure the wings down.

Winky Winky the Owl designed by Lorene Eppolite for Cre8tion Crochet in Peaches & Creme, which is a 100% cotton yarn and I think it may have been discontinued. Knit Picks Dishie and Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6 are great alternatives.

It’s a Hoot Owl Hat & Cape designed by Nancy Anderson for Yarnspirations in Red Heart Super Saver.

Nocturnal Creatures Bag designed by Jenn Palmer in Patons Classic Wool Worsted, which is 100% wool yarn. Bags see a lot of wear so I personally like to use a 100% cotton yarn, like Knit Picks Dishie and Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6.

Owl Cables Afghan Square designed by Wool & Fun Hatchalot Simply Create in a non-specified worsted weight yarn. Depending on how you will use this afghan square, there is a lot of flexibility on yarn options. Maybe you’ll make two and sew on 3 sides to turn into a tote bag, in which case, I’d recommend a 100% cotton yarn, like Knit Picks Dishie and Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6. If you’ll make many and attach them together for a larger project, like a blanket, you might be interested in Lion Brand One Pound or Red Heart Super Saver. These are just a few project examples, you can do so much with squares!

Sleepy Owl Toy designed by Charmed by Ewe in a combination of worsted weight yarns, including Knit Picks Swish and Red Heart Soft. Now, one of these yarns is a 100% superwash merino yarn, and the other is a 100% acrylic yarn, which is a beautiful example of how you can really use any yarns from your stash that are close in gauge. You’ll also need some stuffing.

Willow Snow Owl designed by Divine Debris in a combination of worsted weight yarns, including Bernat Super Value, Red Heart Super Saver and Caron One Pound. You’ll also need some stuffing.

Oswald the Owl designed by Nicole Chase in Knit Picks Brava. You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Baby Owl Lovey designed by MJ’s Off the Hook Designs in Knit Picks Brava. You’ll also need some stuffing for the head of the owl.

Hoot The Owl Washcloth designed by Posh Pooch Designs in a non-specified worsted weight yarn. My favorite 100% cotton worsted weight yarns are Knit Picks Dishie, Queensland Coastal Cotton and Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6. All 3 of these yarns are colorfast, which means you don’t have to worry about the colors fading and bleeding with use and washing. A bonus is they’re a little softer than you’d expect from a 100% cotton yarn.

Kids Snowy Owl Sweater designed by TheFairythorn in Garnstudio Drops Nepal, a 65% Wool, 35% Alpaca yarn, which makes for a really cozy sweater. Ella Rae Cozy Alpaca and Lion Brand Touch of Alpaca are nice alternatives, especially if you can’t do wool, but want the warmth of Alpaca.

JAYG C2C Owl Square designed by My Hobby is Crochet in Red Heart Super Saver.

Little Hoot Owl Blanket designed by Crochet 365 Knit Too in Lion Brand Heartland.

Owl Granny Square Lovey designed by Blackstone Design in I Love This Cotton Yarn from Hobby Lobby, which is a soft, 100% cotton yarn. Knit Picks Dishie and Queensland Coastal Cotton are great alternatives.

You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Woodsy The Owl Stuffie designed by Posh Pooch Designs in I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby, which is a soft, 100% acrylic yarn.

You’ll also need some stuffing and for the eyes, Sara used buttons, but you have a lot of alternative options like safety eyes, felt eyes embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl C2C Hat designed by Nana’s Crafty Home in Caron Simply Soft.

Owl C2C Scarf designed by Nana’s Crafty Home in Caron Simply Soft.

Owl Pillow designed by Blissful Making in a combination of worsted weight yarns, including Red Heart Super Saver and Red Heart With Love. You’ll also need some stuffing.

Owl Candy Bag designed by Stringy Dingding in a non-specified worsted weight yarn. For gift bags, I like to use either Red Heart Super Saver as it’s really durable, or a 100% cotton, like Knit Picks Dishie and Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6.

For the eyes, you’l need either safety eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl Pillow designed by Repeat Crafter Me for Yarnspirations in Red Heart Super Saver.

Owl C2C Blanket from Lovable Loops in Red Heart Super Saver.

The Hootie Owl designed by Yawns and Yarn in a variety of yarns, which produced different size owls. Experimenting with yarn weights like this is one of my favorite things to do because not only is it fun to see the project in different sizes, you begin to picture different projects that can be made with the different sized pieces. The brown owl was worked in Caron Simply Soft.

Heart Belly Owl designed by Divine Debris in Caron One Pound. You’ll also need some stuffing.

Pumpkin Belly Owl designed by Divine Debris in a combination of worsted weight yarns, including Red Heart Super Saver, Bernat Super Value and Loops and Threads Impeccable from Michaels. You’ll also need some stuffing.

Owl Backpack for Doll designed by Karen Tenney in Caron Simply Soft. Now, while this backpack was made for a doll, I think it would make a really cute little coin purse or a little bag for some small gifts and candies.

The eyes are buttons, but you have a lot of alternative options like safety eyes, felt eyes embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

I’m not exactly sure what the nose is, but I think it’s an oval shank button. You could also use an oval bead or toggle button.

Wise Old Owl with Graduation Cap designed by Repeat Crafter Me in Caron Simply Soft.

You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl Tissue Box Cover designed by Nicki’s Homemade Crafts in Caron Simply Soft. For the eyes, Nicki used safety eyes, but you have a lot of alternative options as well like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Little Owl Car Seat Canopy designed by Left in Knots in Red Heart With Love.

Christmas Owl Coaster designed by Repeat Crafter Me in Bernat Super Value Yarn. Although an acrylic yarn, a hot cup of coffee is not hot enough to melt synthetic fibers so this really opens doors for yarn options.

For the eyes, Sarah used buttons, but you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl Mug Cozy designed by Kitty’s Kreations Boutique in Red Heart Super Saver. Although an acrylic yarn, a hot cup of coffee is not hot enough to melt synthetic fibers so this really opens doors for yarn options.

It’s a Hoot Owl Container designed by Michele Wilcox for Yarnspirations in Red Heart Super Saver.

Owl Bag designed by Tifny McCammon in Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice. Bags see a lot of wear so I personally like to use a 100% cotton yarn, like Knit Picks Dishie and Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6.

For the eyes, Tifny used buttons, but you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Whoo’s My Cutie Blanket designed by Michele Wilcox for Yarnspirations in Red Heart Super Saver.

Baby Owl Corner-to-Corner designed by Repeat Crafter Me for Lion Brand in Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice.

Free Owl Crochet Patterns in Chunky Weight Yarn

Baby Hoot Hat designed by Melody’s Makings in Yarn Bee Tender Touch from Hobby Lobby, which is a 100% acrylic yarn. For the eyes, Melody used buttons, but you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl Cushion designed by the Yarnsmiths for The Wool Warehouse in Yarnsmiths Chenille Chunky, which is a 100% polyester yarn available in the UK. Circulo Pelucia and Ella Rae Cuddle are great alternatives.

You’ll also need either a round pillow form or stuffing. I absolutely love the felt eyes they used on their pillow, but you have a lot of alternative options like safety eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl Amigurumi from Stringy Dingding in Red Heart Hygge, which is a 70% Acrylic, 30% Nylon that is soft and fuzzy so it’s a great texture for stuffies. The pink owl was worked in a 100% acrylic yarn showing another great example of the same exact pattern worked in a different yarn (including weight).

You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Owl Be Warm Hat designed by YARNutopia in a combination of yarns, including Red Heart Hygge for the majority, which is a 70% Acrylic, 30% Nylon that is soft and fuzzy so it’s a great texture for animals, and Red Heart Super Saver for some of the accents.

Wise Owl Tote Bag designed by Michele Wilcox for Yarnspirations using two strands of Red Heart Super Saver held together to make a chunky weight.

For the eyes, Michele used buttons, but you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Free Owl Crochet Patterns in Super Bulky Weight Yarn

Baby Owl Crochet Tree Ornament designed The Loopy Lamb in a combination of yarns, including Knit Picks Fairy Tale Fur for the main body, and Knit Picks Brava for the accents. You’ll also need some stuffing and some safety eyes.
