Penguin Crochet Patterns in Fingering Weight Yarn

Penguin Applique designed by Golden Lucy Crafts. Olena does not specify which yarn she used for her appliques, but they’re made in a size 3 cotton thread, which is equal to a #1 fingering weight yarn. Aunt Lydia’s Fashion Crochet Thread Size 3 and Circulo Anne are great yarn options.
Penguin Crochet Patterns in Sport Weight Yarn

Penguin in Christmas Sock designed by Marina Chuchkalova in Alize Cotton Gold Yarn, which is a blend of acrylic and cotton. I think Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK or Queensland Coastal Cotton Fine would be great alternatives, though may produce a slightly larger penguin. You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes, or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Penguin Poppy designed by Natalia Ruzanova in Scheepjes Catona, which is a 100% mercerized cotton yarn available through some local yarn shops and on Amazon.
Penguin Crochet Patterns in Lightweight Yarn

Penguin Crochet Buddy designed by Briana K Designs in Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek DK Yarn, which is a soft, low pill 100% acrylic yarn found at Hobby Lobby. Premier Yarn has a similar yarn called Everyday DK, but feel free to substitute with your favorite DK weight yarn.

Penguin Granny Square designed by Granny Square.Me. It’s not specified in the pattern which yarn was used other than a DK wool. There are a lot of great options depending on the project you want to make with your granny square. For something like a purse, I’d recommend either Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK or Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/4. For something like a cozy blanket or scarf, I’d recommend Berroco Vintage DK or Lion Brand Wool Ease DK. You can even change up the yarn weight and hook size to get different sized squares.
Penguin Crochet Patterns in Worsted Weight Yarn

Cute Penguin Coaster designed by Divine Debris in Knit Picks Brava Yarn. Brava is a 100% acrylic yarn, which works just fine for coasters as a hot cup of coffee is not hot enough to melt synthetic fibers. If you prefer a 100% cotton though, I love Knit Picks Dishie, Queensland Coastal Cotton and Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6, which are a little softer than you might expect from a 100% cotton yarn, but more importantly, they’re colorfast so you don’t have to worry about the colors fading and/or bleeding.

Penguin Coaster designed by The Loopy Lamb in Knit Picks Dishie, which is a 100% cotton yarn. Alternatively, I love Queensland Coastal Cotton and Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6. All 3 of these cottons are a little softer than you might expect from a 100% cotton yarn, but more importantly, they’re colorfast so you don’t have to worry about the colors fading and/or bleeding. A hot cup of coffee is not hot enough to melt synthetic fibers so feel free to substitute with your favorite worsted weight yarn.

Ragdoll Penguin designed by Loops and Love Crochet in Knit Picks Brava Yarn, which is a 100% acrylic yarn that is soft and comes in a ton of colors. You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes, or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Snuggles the Penguin designed by All About Ami in Red Heart Super Saver, which is a 100% acrylic yarn that is very durable and comes in a ton of colors. You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes, or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Playful the Baby Penguin designed by Stitches n Scraps. She doesn’t specify the yarn used, but you can easily grab any yarn from your stash to crochet one (or 10) cute, baby penguins. You’ll also need some stuffing. Pia has embroidered the eyes on, but you could also use safety eyes, felt eyes or use puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few options.

Penguin Lovey designed by The Blue Elephants in Yarn Bee Soft Secrets Yarn, which is a soft, 100% acrylic yarn available from Hobby Lobby. This yarn is very similar to Caron Simply Soft, and if you’ve ever worked with that yarn, you know it can pill easier than others and is best suited for hand washing. I would recommend an alternative yarn for a lovey that will withstand lots of use and washing. You’ll also need some stuffing for the head and either safety eyes, or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Penguin Jingle Bell Ornament designed by A Crocheted Simplicity in a combination of Lion Brand Pound of Love and Lion Brand Basic Stitch, which are both 100% acrylic yarns. Jennifer has so many great photos showing each step along the way of creating this adorable penguin ornament. You’ll also need either safety eyes, or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few. She attached her penguin to a large jingle bell, but you could easily use a bauble ornament or large bead you might already have in your stash. She also does not use stuffing in the head, but you could easily add it to fill it out a bit more if desired.

Penguin Amigurumi designed by Spin a Yarn Crochet in Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, which is a 100% mercerized cotton yarn that is has a really great stitch definition and added durability. You’ll also need some stuffing and either safety eyes, or you have a lot of alternative options like felt eyes, embroidering the eyes on and using puffy paint to draw them on, just to name a few.

Penguin Hat designed by Repeat Crafter Me in Loops and Threads Impeccable Yarn, which is a soft and plushy, 100% acrylic yarn found at Michaels. Feel free to substitute this yarn for your favorite worsted weight yarn, but some of my favorites for cozy beanies are Knit Picks Swish, Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage. Sarah does not specify the button size for the eyes, but I’m thinking 1/2″ – 3/4″, depending on the size of the hat you will be making. Alternatively, you can crochet or embroider the eyes, attach felt eyes or even use puffy paint to draw them on.

Penguin Earflap Beanie designed by damn it Janet, let’s crochet! Janet does not specify which yarn was used in the pattern, but some of my favorites for cozy beanies are Knit Picks Swish, Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage. I love the big, crocheted eyes on these sweet penguin beanies. Alternatively, you could sew on large buttons, embroider the eyes, attach felt eyes or even use puffy paint to draw them on.

Penguin Hat with Moveable Wings designed by Nicki’s Homemade Crafts in Premier Yarns Pixie Dust Brights Yarn, which is a 100% chenille style, polyester yarn, like blanket yarn but in the worsted weight category. What makes this even more magical though are the movable wings activated by an air pump at the bottom of the earflaps.

Polar Bear and Penguin Pals C2C Graphgan designed by Nana’s Crafty Home in a combination of Red Heart With Love for the background and penguins, which is a soft, 100% acrylic yarn, and Bernat Pipsqueak for the polar bear, which is a soft, 100% polyester loopy yarn. You can easily substitute the yarn for the background and penguins for your favorite worsted weight yarn – with 1,020 yards per ball, Lion Brand Pound of Love would be a great option – and for the Pipsqueak Yarn, which has been discontinued in most of the colors at the time of posting, Premier Yarns Pixie Dust Brights would be a great alternative, especially being a worsted weight yarn.
