When I first started getting into yarn crafts, it was needlepoint on plastic canvas and Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. It’s been a staple in my home for about 15 years as I’ve continued with plastic canvas projects and during my crocheting journey. In the last 12 years, I’ve shared more than 50 free crochet patterns with you that use Red Heart Super Saver as my yarn choice, and you’ll find these in this collection including crochet beanies, scarves, shawls, slippers, tote bags, throw pillows, blankets, amigurumi and more!

What Yarn Weight is Red Heart Super Saver?
If you’re not familiar with Red Heart Super Saver, it’s a worsted weight #4 yarn comprised of 100% acrylic that has been around for more than 30 years. They used to have a standalone website, but nowadays, they are part of the Yarnspirations brand.
Acrylic yarn is a synthetic fiber, meaning it’s plastic, but it lends to a durable yarn that is versatile for many projects and stands the test of time.
How Many Yards is Red Heart Super Saver Yarn?
Red Heart Super Saver comes in center pull skeins in a generous amount of 364 yards for the solid colors and 236 yards for the prints, variegated, striped, flecks and heathered colorways. It’s also available in a Jumbo size, which has 744 yards for the solid colors and 482 for the variegated and heathered colorways. If you’ve fallen in love with the Ombre line like I have, those contain 482 yards each. I could go on and on because there are a few other lines as well, but I’ll stop here for now as these are the ones I’ve used the most in my designs.
Does Red Heart Super Saver Have Dye Lots?
One of the awesome things about Red Heart Super Saver is that it does not have Dye Lots so this means that if you run out of yarn for a project and need to go back for more, you can pick any of the skeins and it will match your project. Now, each skein wrapper does have a batch number on it, and when I’m working big projects, I still try my best to match the batch numbers, but I’ve never experienced color differences in all of the years I’ve used Red Heart Super Saver.
What Size Crochet Hook to use for Red Heart Super Saver?
The manufacturer recommends an I9/5.5mm crochet hook to go with Red Heart Super Saver, but I am a rebel and like to use my H8/5mm crochet hook for all things worsted weight yarn. I will admit, the fabric is usually a bit stiffer right off the bat, and the drape is much nicer with an I9/5.5mm or J10/6mm crochet hook — this can change with washing.
One thing I do want to point out is that while I may not experience color differences, I have experienced thickness differences so the point where for some colorways I use my H8/5mm crochet hook and for others, I use my J10/6mm crochet hook to equal the same gauge. This is an on-going experience so make sure you are checking your gauge.
Is Red Heart Super Saver Scratchy? How Do You Make Red Heart Super Saver Softer?
If you’ve ever touched Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, you know that it is a rougher yarn – some would describe it as scratchy.
It does not bother me, but if you have concerns about using Red Heart Super Saver and similar because of the roughness and stiffness of the fabric, I have a couple tips!
- If the yarn is too rough for your hands to crochet with, remove the skein wrapper, place the skein into a mesh lingerie bag (I bought mine at JoAnn’s — do not use a pillowcase), then machine wash it by itself on the gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent. Once it’s finished, toss it into the dryer on low heat – you may need to run it through 2 – 3 times to get the center dry.
- To add softness and better drape to the finished piece, crochet in it’s entirety and weave in the ends, then wash and dry in the same manner (with our without the lingerie bag) or simply dry once with a dryer sheet.
Can You Wash Red Heart Super Saver? Is Red Heart Super Saver Good Quality Yarn?
Red Heart Super Saver Yarn can be machine washed (I do so in cold water on the gentle cycle) and dried (I do so on low heat and lay flat to dry the remainder) and still looks great afterwards – it actually gets softer with washing! It withstands many washings and dryings before starting to pill and look rough, and then I just take my scissors to the halo and carefully give it a hair cut.
For years, I’ve been on the hunt for the best yarns, and Red Heart Super Saver is one of those that are at the top of my list. When I opened my yarn shop in April of 2024, I destashed all of my Red Heart Super Saver to refresh my stash with yarns I could sell in the shop, but in all of this time, I have found nice yarns for different projects, but I have not been able to find a replacement for it in the brands I’ve been working with. Going back to the fact it’s been around for more than 30 years – there is a reason!
