Recently, I made a video tutorial showing Everything You Need to Know about How to Half Double Crochet. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while to accompany my How to Half Double Crochet photo tutorial, and I am beyond thrilled with it. As I was making my list in the video of half double crochet project ideas, it sparked the idea for this fun Back to Basics crochet series, with this one focusing on easy half double crochet patterns that are beginner friendly.
This Back to Basics Crochet Event kicks off on September 20th and will run through September 26th – 7 days in total.
We’re going to start with the tutorial itself, and then each day after, there will be a different featured crochet pattern. You will find the written pattern available on either my EyeLoveKnots blog, on my Cre8tion Crochet blog, or right here on the Yarn Crafts & Coffee blog along with a video tutorial — both forever free to view, not just during the event — plus on it’s special day, you will get a coupon to add the pattern to your Ravelry library for free. This coupon will be found in the “PDF” section of the blog post found about halfway down, before the Materials section – look for the graphics.
Did you know that blog subscribers can download PDFs right from our Free File Library? Join my newsletter list, check your email for a confirmation then you’ll receive a welcome newsletter with the password to the Free File Library, a tab at the top of on my EyeLoveKnots and Cre8tion Crochet blogs (same for both). Each month, I change the password so you’ll just want to reference your newest newsletter for it.
Below you’ll find the schedule. Some of these patterns have been previously posted, but I have been working on updating some of them, and of course, some new projects as well. This post and the Ravelry coupons will go live by 10am EST on it’s day, and I will send a newsletter out at that time to let you know. The Ravelry coupon will remain live until 10am EST on the following day.
I wanted to make sure you had time to gather up your supplies so you’ll find the details for each one right underneath it’s photo. Tell me, do you like knowing the projects ahead of time, or as a surprise each day?
I had so much fun putting together this crochet series. Happy crocheting 🙂

SEPTEMBER 20TH -Day 1 – how to half double crochet
I remember when I was learning to crochet. Most of the patterns I tried used single crochet, and many of the rest used double crochet. There weren’t that many that used half double crochet, but I think it’s a wonderful stitch pattern, and easy to do. I have a great love for the texture that half double crochet creates in it’s fabric. It has better flexibility like double crochet, but has better coverage like single crochet. It’s one of my favorites, and so versatile!
This beginner friendly crochet tutorial will show you how to half double crochet stitch step by step. There is a Quick Refresher at the beginning of the video, if that’s all you need, and then it starts all the way from the beginning at How to Pick Your Yarn, How to Hold Your Yarn, How to Make a Slip Knot and goes from there – everything you need to know about how to get started all the way through adding a border.
In my sample, I’m using Lion Brand Pound of Love, which is a worsted weight #4 yarn, but feel free to use your favorite worsted weight yarn, or experiment with other yarn weights.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook to go with the worsted weight yarn, or whatever the respective size is if you’re changing up the weight.

21st – Day 2 – haylee washcloth
The Haylee Washcloth pattern comes in 7 sizes from 4″ up to 10″ so you can make the perfect size you prefer using! You’ll need 20 – 85 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – depending on the size you’ll be making. I used Queensland Coastal Cotton for mine.
Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6 or WeCrochet Dishie are great alternatives. My number one thing for picking a great 100% cotton yarn to work with is making sure it’s colorfast, which means the color is set, otherwise, as you use and wash the washcloth, the colors will fade and bleed. All 3 of my recommendations here are colorfast.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook.

22nd – Day 3 – haylee rectangle shawl
To make the Haylee Rectangle Shawl, you’ll need 820 – 1790 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – depending on the size you’ll be making. I used a beautiful hand dyed yarn called Emma’s Washable Worsted that I picked up at one of my favorite local yarn shops in Winter Haven, Florida called Four Purls. If you’d like to use a hand dyed yarn for your shawl, I can’t recommend a visit to your local yarn shop enough! They are so many beautiful options out there. Feel to use your favorite worsted weight yarn, but I’ll provide some additional ideas:
If you’re looking for acrylic yarn, I really enjoy using Lion Brand Pound of Love, and at 1020 yards each skein, one skein really goes a long way! For a cozier option, go with a wool blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease or Berroco Vintage. For a warm weather option, a cotton blend, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Made with Love are great choices.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook.

23rd – Day 4 – haylee afghan
To make the Haylee Afghan, you’ll need 90 – 6880 Yards of Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – depending on the size you’ll be making. This blanket pattern comes in 12 sizes from Lovey up to California King. I’ve used Lion Brand Pound of Love in the Oxford Grey and White colorways for mine. Pound of Love is a soft, 100% acrylic yarn that comes in 1020 yard skeins so one skein goes a really long way, but feel free to substitute it with your favorite worsted weight yarn.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook.

24th – Day 5 – haylee wreath
To make the Haylee Wreath, you’ll need 160 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I’ve used Lion Brand Pound of Love in the Oxford Grey colorway for mine. Pound of Love is a 100% acrylic yarn that comes in 1020 yard skeins so one skein goes a really long way, but feel free to substitute it with your favorite worsted weight yarn.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook and a 12″ styrofoam wreath base. For this project, it’s important to check the size of the fabric to ensure it will fit, so you’ll also want to have a soft tape measure handy.

25tH – Day 6 – haylee ear warmer
To make the Haylee Ear Warmer, you’ll need about 60 – 90 yards of worsted weight yarn depending on if you’re making the Toddler, Child or Adult size. I used Lion Brand Wool Ease in Forest Green Heather for my main ear warmer worked like a simple tube – shown at the top – but as you can see, it’s very easy to switch up the yarn to your favorite worsted weight yarn, and finish the beginner friendly project in different ways.
The turquoise colored ear warmer was finished with a cinch and made with a hand dyed yarn that’s been discontinued. The pink colored one was finished a mobius twist and also made with Lion Brand Wool Ease. The gray colored one was finished with a cinch and then wrapped and made with Lion Brand Jeans. The cream colored one was finished with a twist and made with Berroco Vintage.
So many fun options, but I wanted these to be beginner friendly patterns so I’ve chosen a simple rectangle design to start with.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook and a 12″ styrofoam wreath base. For this project, it’s important to check the size of the fabric to ensure it will fit, so you’ll also want to have a soft tape measure handy.

26TH – Day 7 – haylee afghan square
The Haylee Afghan Square has 12 sizes ranging from 4″ all the way up to 27″ so you’ll have the perfect size square for any project!
You’ll need some worsted weight yarn. I’ve used Lion Brand Pound of Love for all 3 of mine shown in the photo, and have plans to turn the green and orange ones into blankets, and the blue one into a throw pillow. Pound of Love is a soft, 100% acrylic yarn that comes in 1020 yard skeins so one skein goes a really long way, but depending on the project you’ll be working with this square, the yarn options can vary – they’re practically endless though! Feel to use your favorite worsted weight yarn, but I’ll provide some ideas for a couple projects:
For things like an afghan, scarf and shawl, acrylic yarn, like the Pound of Love I used, is a good choice. For a cozier option, go with a wool blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease or Berroco Vintage. For a warm weather option, a cotton blend, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Made with Love are great choices.
For things like a tote bag, washcloth or table runner, a 100% cotton yarn, like Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6, WeCrochet Dishie or Queensland Coastal Cotton is what I would recommend. These are nice, durable options that wear and machine wash well and are also colorfast (not all cotton yarns are).
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook. If the finished size is essential to the project you’ll be making, then it’s important to check the size of the fabric, and for that you’ll also want to have a soft tape measure handy.
