Shay Coasters — Saturday, February 8th from 10:30am to 12:30pm {Must pre-pay to Reserve your Spot}
This is a great beginner friendly project to learn the basics of crocheting and practice tension. We’ll be using single crochet stitches for this cute coaster, which also works as large facial scrubbie to clean your face with and remove make up or as a small kitchen scrubbie for dishes.
Coasters (and scrubbies) make excellent gifts and are great projects for on the go and stashbusting. Once you’re comfortable with chaining and single crocheting in rows, you can apply the same concept to create larger projects, like washcloths, scarves, shawls, blankets and more, or even try different techniques and yarns such as changing colors to create stripes or holding a strand of scrubbie yarn together with your cotton yarn for extra scrubbing power.
If you do not want a coaster/scrubbie, you can follow the same pattern to work up an afghan square that can later be used for other projects, such as a tote bag, throw pillow or blanket.
Cost: $20 — Supplies included
Supplies will include a written crochet pattern, 1 ball of worsted weight #4 cotton yarn — specifically, Lion Brand Pima Cotton or Lion Brand Local Grown Cotton — and a H8/5mm crochet hook. I will have other class supplies on hand such as tapestry needles for weaving in ends, scissors and tape measures.
For me, they take about 20 minutes to work up. This seems like a small amount of time in the two hour span of the class, but as a beginner, you will be starting and possibly restarting so you most likely will get about halfway finished by the end of the class. If you have some crochet experience, you should finish the coaster and learn how to evenly single crochet around to add a simple border. Pay once for the class, and return in the same time slot on another Saturday or during Sunday Stitching to continue working and/or finish the coaster together.
In this class you will review / learn how to: read a crochet pattern — make a slip knot — crochet a chain — work into a chain — single crochet in rows — evenly single crochet around for a simple border (optional) — weave in ends.
