The An Apple a Day Crafting Event kicks off on August 1st and will run through August 7th – 7 days in total.

I’m teaming up with my friends Emily of Crochet Aweigh and Candace of T&C Crafters for this event. Each day, there will be a different featured craft projects, and it will either be available on one of their blogs or on one of mine – EyeLoveKnots blog or Yarn Crafts & Coffee. We’re going to share a total of 6 crochet projects and 1 plastic canvas pattern.

August 1st -Day 1 – Apple Mini Bag

Originally, this mini crochet bag was designed as a soap cozy, where you place a bar of soap in it and use it in the shower to exfoliate with and make your bar of soap go further, but these mini crochet bags are also perfect as candy pouches for parties, as small gift bags, a coin purse or even a dice bag!

Imagine this little bag as a soap cozy gifted with a homemade soap or textured facial scrubbies, as a candy or favor pouch at an Apple Picking Party or Fall Festival, or as a gift bag for a gift card to a favorite coffee shop for Teacher Appreciation Week or some Fall themed earrings, like these Cross Stitched Apple Earrings found on my EyeLoveKnots blog.

I always remember on Meet the Teacher Day, some teachers gave out really cute curated brown paper bags with trinkets inside. If you had a small class, you may consider placing those trinkets inside a crocheted apple gift bag and a bonus would be finding ways to incorporate that bag into the school year.

Now, there are a lot of great options for these mini bags, mostly dependent on how you will use the bag. I’ll share some yarns with you that I think would be great options for the mini bag and following the apple theme, but really, the sky is the limit here.

If you are going to use this bag as a soap cozy, you’ll want to use either a 100% cotton or a blend of cotton with linen, cotton with bamboo or linen with bamboo. Linen gets strong when wet, and gets softer and nicer with each wash. On it’s own, it’s on the rougher side for feel, but linen blends often combine with cotton or bamboo to add softness. Bamboo yarns have a high absorbency – even more than cotton – however, bamboo is weaker when wet, and more prone to developing mold so if bamboo is a fiber you want to use, I definitely recommend going with a blend of linen and/or cotton. Stay away from synthetic fibers, like acrylic, as they lack the absorbency needed.

As a gift bag, candy pouch or favor bag, you can reach for any fiber yarn desired. This pattern was written for a 100% cotton yarn, which produces a more relaxed fabric. If you choose a different fiber, such as 100% acrylic, you may want to go up a hook to achieve the same measurements.

August 2nd -Day 2 – Apple Wreath

An Apple Wreath would be the perfect decor piece to add to your home for Fall, to a farm themed nursery or kids room, or a classroom.

By using sewing pins to hold the leaves in place, rather than permanently attaching them, this wreath base can easily be transformed later for another holiday, such as Christmas if you made a red base. The sewing pins stick down into the foam to keep everything in place for as long as you need, and then when you are ready to change the embellishments out, simply pull them out and redecorate.

My favorite yarns for crocheting a wreath are going to be 100% acrylic yarns, but specifically, I like Premier Yarns Basix Worsted, Lion Brand Pound of Love and Red Heart Super Saver. These yarns hold up well to wear and tear, and while they will fade over time, I feel that these yarns hold their color the best over other yarns I’ve tried, as well as the shaping of embellishments. If the wreath will be inside only, you could go with cotton blends and embellishments, but for outdoor wreaths, cottons fade quickly and begin to fall apart.
