This listing is for one (1) unstitched plastic canvas letter in soft, clear canvas that is PERFECT for SO many things! For example, you could string them up to make a name banner, use them to decorate a plaque, sign, or wreath, make them 3D and use as self-standing or ornaments, add magnets to the back to teach little ones among so many other ways!

Needlepoint on plastic canvas was a popular craft of the 1970’s peaking in popularity through the 1990’s. It brings all of the fun decorative stitches and details of needlepointing but on a sturdier plastic mesh with larger holes making it an easier and more comfortable choice over needlepointing on fabric as it’s easier to count the holes, see the stitches and handle as you work and you’re able to work up projects faster including 3 dimensional projects without having to be a master sewer to finish the project.

Plastic canvas mesh comes with different hole sizes from large holes in 5 mesh, the most popular 7 mesh, a smaller 10 mesh and a perforated 14 mesh most commonly used for making bookmarks and card embellishments.

The size of the mesh is equal to the number of holes per inch so in a 7 mesh canvas, 7 holes equals 1″ tall and wide, this is why the smaller the mesh size, the larger the number of mesh ie 5 mesh has larger holes than a 10 mesh.

You might be surprised to know that plastic canvas is not only used for needlepointing, but you can also embroidery and cross stitch using the holes of the mesh.

• 14 Mesh: 1 3/8″ by 7/8″
• 10 Mesh: 1 7/8″ by 1 1/4″
• 7 Mesh: 2 3/4″ by 1 7/8″
• 5 Mesh: 3 3/4″ by 2 5/8″

Note: Stitched letters will finish a little larger.

Supplies Needed to Stitch:
– Yarn or Thread

• 14 Mesh: Size 3 or 5 Pearl Cotton or 4 to 6 strands from a standard 6-strand embroidery floss
• 10 Mesh: Sport Weight #2 Yarn or Lightweight #3 Yarn
• 7 Mesh: Worsted Weight #4 Yarn
• 5 Mesh: Chunky Weight #5 Yarn

– Blunt, Round Tip Tapestry Needle

• 14 Mesh: size 24
• 10 Mesh: size 18 or 20
• 7 Mesh: size 18
• 5 Mesh: size 13 or 18

– Scissors

– Optional, Needle Threader

– Optional, felt, fabric, or cork for a cleaner back

To Use These Letters:
Use the tent stitch aka continental stitch pattern to fill in your letter. When finished, whipstitch around to finish.
