Last year, I shared a Back to Basics Event featuring Half Double Crochets. This year, I thought it was only fitting to choose another basic stitch pattern – the single crochet that is – and feature single crochet crochet patterns that are beginner friendly.
Because my views were so minimum for the how to half double crochet video, I decided not to make one for the single crochet stitch, but I do have a How to Single Crochet photo tutorial that will take you through each step.
This Back to Basics Crochet Event kicks off on October 20th and will run through October 26th – 7 days in total.
We’re going to start with the tutorial itself, and then each day after, there will be a different featured crochet pattern. You will find the written pattern available on either my EyeLoveKnots blog, on my Cre8tion Crochet blog, or right here on the Yarn Crafts & Coffee blog along with a video tutorial — both forever free to view, not just during the event — plus on it’s special day, you will get a coupon to add the pattern to your Ravelry library for free. This coupon will be found in the “PDF” section of the blog post found about halfway down, before the Materials section – look for the graphics.
Did you know that blog subscribers can download PDFs right from our Free File Library? Join my newsletter list, check your email for a confirmation then you'll receive a welcome newsletter with the password to the Free File Library, a tab at the top of on my blog. Each month, I change the password so you'll just want to reference your newest newsletter for it.
Below you’ll find the schedule. Some of these patterns have been previously posted, but I have been working on updating some of them, and of course, some new projects as well. This post and the Ravelry coupons will go live by 12pm EST on it’s day, and I will send a newsletter out at that time to let you know. The Ravelry coupon will remain live until end of day EST on the following day.
I had so much fun putting together this crochet series. Happy crocheting 🙂

October 20TH -Day 1 – how to single crochet
I remember learning to crochet. The first stitch pattern I learned was how to single crochet. I think it’s pretty standard for crochet books to teach this as the first crochet stitch.
My advice when learning and working with the single crochet is to be patient, and cautious not to pull your stitches because by nature, the stitch pattern is more stiff, and you do not want to add to that as it can restrict the fabric from stretching properly. Just go slow, and work on a nice, even tension. If it ends up feeling too tight, try going up a crochet hook size – it will help the fabric lay nicer aka better drape, and be more breathable.
This beginner friendly crochet tutorial will show you how to single crochet stitch step by step.
I made a video tutorial showing how to count rows of single crochet.
I also have a video tutorial showing how to evenly single crocheting around the edges for a simple border that will make your single crocheted project look more finished with neat edges.
In my sample, I’m using Lion Brand Pound of Love, which is a worsted weight #4 yarn, but feel free to use your favorite worsted weight yarn, or experiment with other yarn weights.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook to go with the worsted weight yarn, or whatever the respective size is if you’re changing up the weight.
