Needlepoint on plastic canvas was a popular craft of the 1970’s peaking in popularity through the 1990’s. It brings all of the fun decorative stitches and details of needlepointing but on a more sturdier plastic mesh with larger holes making it an easier and more comfortable choice over needlepointing on fabric as it’s easier to count the holes, see the stitches and handle as you work and you’re able to work up projects faster including 3 dimensional projects without having to be a master sewer to finish the project.

Plastic canvas mesh come in sheets that can easily be cut to create a custom size or shape. You can overlap the sheets to create larger projects and you can also purchase pre-cut shapes. Hole sizes also range from large holes in 5 mesh (aka 5 count) most commonly used for rug making, the most popular 7 mesh (aka 7 count), a smaller 10 mesh (aka 10 count) often used to achieve smaller sized projects or to be able to add more detail and a perforated 14 mesh (aka 14 count) most commonly used for making bookmarks, ornaments and card embellishments.

The size of the mesh is equal to the number of holes per inch so in a 7 mesh canvas, 7 holes equals 1″ tall and wide, this is why the smaller the mesh size, the larger the number of mesh ie 5 mesh has larger holes than a 10 mesh.

You might be surprised to know that plastic canvas is not only used for needlepointing, but you can also embroidery and cross stitch using the holes of the mesh and the plastic mesh is used to add stability to crochet, knitting and sewing projects.

Colors:

• The 14 mesh, 10 mesh and 5 mesh only come as a soft mesh in the clear color
• 7 mesh is available as soft or stiff in a clear color as well as soft in a variety of other colors (to be added later, but feel free to inquire)
